Salma Hayek's biggest Hollywood break was with Robert Rodriguez's Desperado. Her rise to prominence with Frida, a film which was nominated to win an Academy Award. Hayek is also an active participant with television shows, particularly as the director of Ugly Betty. Salma Hayek Jimenez, daughter of Spanish and Lebanese parents was born in Mexico on the 2nd of September 1996, at Coatzacoalcos. Hayek was brought up in a privileged Catholic household. As a young girl she was enrolled in a convent in Louisiana. When she was in her teens, Hayek lived with her Texas aunt. After a short stint at a university in Mexico City and then she walked out of school to pursue a profession in acting. She eventually went on to become a telenovela star from her home country of Mexico. The first film of the year was released in the year 1991. Hayek made the move to California in 1991 to Los Angeles to work on her English. Her roles were limited prior to landing a lead role in the film Desperado with Antonio Banderas.
